Winter’s Bone (2010)
Screening as part of the 2025 From Page To Screen film festival
Introduced by festival curator Andrew Chater
Winter’s Bone catapulted a young Jennifer Lawrence to stardom with this vividly naturalistic thriller set in Missouri’s Ozark Mountains. Debra Granik’s starkly beautiful film ratchets up the tension of Daniel Woodrell’s backwoods whodunnit and delivers some genuinely heart-stopping moments.
Lawrence’s unflinching, 17-year-old Ree faces the challenges of her impoverished mountain community with dignity and grit in a mesmerising performance that secured her first Academy Award nomination. Oscar-nominated John Hawkes is equally powerful as her drug-dealing uncle and both Granik and Anne Rosellini were also up for Best Adapted Screenplay and the film itself for Best Motion Picture.
Dir. Debra Granik, USA 2010, 100 mins. With Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan, Dale Dickey.

Director Debra Granik brings this bleak place to quiet life, her unflinching eye capturing the landscape’s nuances as boldly as if it were a character’s features.
