Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton star as old friends in Almodóvar’s ravishing English language debut (based on ‘What Are You Going Through’ by Sigrid Nunez) which won the Golden Lion at last year’s Venice Film Festival.
At a book signing, best-selling author Ingrid (Moore) learns that war correspondent Martha (Swinton) is gravely ill in hospital. As her health declines, Martha persuades her reluctant friend to accompany her on her final journey to a remote woodland retreat.
The director explores themes of friendship and alienation, life and death, honesty and deception in an austere yet moving meditation. Sumptuous costumes and interiors, a brooding score and echoes of Hitchcock and Douglas Sirk provide the backdrop to the rewardingly enigmatic narrative.

This is Almodóvar’s America and it’s a delight.
A lovely, mordant, tender affair; a lush September song in duet, performed with aplomb by Swinton and Moore as they stroll the secondhand bookstores or lounge by the pool they can’t be bothered to swim in.
