Road To Perdition (2002)
Screening as part of the 2025 From Page To Screen film festival
Introduced by festival curator Andrew Chater
After a bloody double-cross by fearsome mob boss John Rooney (Paul Newman), hitman Sullivan (Tom Hanks) and his son Michael begin a long and dangerous road to revenge.
Sam Mendes’ adaptation of the graphic novel by Max Allan Collins and Richard Piers Rayner is a classic gangster tale, luxuriating in the iconography of neon-lit roadside diners, banks ready to be looted and rain-drenched, Depression-era Chicago. But at the heart of this thrilling tale of vengeance is a tender journey to reconciliation between fathers and sons, punctuated by Thomas Newman’s heart-wrenching and beautiful score.
Dir. Sam Mendes, USA 2002, 117 mins. With Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Jude Law, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Stanley Tucci, Daniel Craig.

Reviews
A triumph... Hanks is quietly devastating and it's a thrill to watch Newman. Put 'Road' on the shortlist for the best movie of 2002.
Visually glorious... 'Road to Perdition' looks amazing.
The most enthralling film you'll ever see... Amazing.
