George Biles | King of Signwriters Exhibition

Allsop Gallery open 10am – 4pm | Tuesday – Saturday

Free Entry

We are proud to be hosting a “Bridport Theatre” and “centre of town” themed show of artworks created by George Biles between 1920 – 1987 as part of the town wide King of Signwriters exhibition.

There will be 4 handpainted Pantomime canvas backdrops on display to see up close and personal. Originally painted to fit the stage of the Electric Palace (26ft wide and 21ft tall in some cases) in around 1924 for Bridport Operatic Society.

There will be a display of draft pencil sketches he made for the Royal Charter Pageant Posters and booklet. Many preserved pencil layout drafts of Bridport High Street shop Signage of the time and original coloured signs on display, kindly loaned to us by local businesses and collectors.

There will also be live Traditional Signwriting demonstrations periodically throughout the month.
A not to be missed – “celebratory” creative reflection of Bridport’s own Master craftsman George Biles and the beautiful practice of painting…..
