PART 1 OF ‘CELEBRATING DANCE ON FILM’

PINA:

Wim Wender’s passionate and exhilarating tribute to legendary dance choreographer, Pina Bausch. This mesmerising dance-documentary presents the astonishing work of Pina Bausch performed by her Tanztheater Wuppertal. She died during the filming of what was intended as a collaboration with Wenders, who had known her for 20 years. It has become a poignant tribute to this brilliant, reticent choreographer and performer

Plus the first part of an inspiring programme of short films from exceptional Bridport-based dance companies including at this 2.30pm screening, the premiere of Bridport Youth Dance’s new film, Dance Weavers 4, Choreography Geography:

DANCE WEAVERS I to IV – Bridport Youth Dance

The Dance Weavers films initially emerged from Bridport Youth Dance’s creative response to the lockdown of 2020. During this time BYD established both a remote programme and an outdoor dance education programme –  dancing in gardens with live music, on beaches and creating site specific work including “Cloud Nine” on Charmouth Beach and “Choreography Geography” on Eggardon Hill.

At the same time BYD’s founder and director Nikki Northover began to collaborate with former BYD dancer and talented local film maker Elliot Millson to create a series of short dance films, The Dance Weavers, which are largely set in the spectacular landscape of West Dorset with the young dancers responding to the land through movement and dance.

The first two Dance Weavers films – Emerging and Freedom / Connection were selected to be a part of the prestigious National U Dance platform, which celebrates the best of youth dance across the United Kingdom.

The Dance Weavers – Freedom/ Connection was one of two films from the South-West of England to be premiered at The British Film Institute, Southbank London in 2022 and at the MAC in Birmingham.

The Dance Weaver series continued with “From the Boards to the Earth” which explores the magic of BYD’s work both in the local landscape and on stage.

Premiered at this Celebrating Dance on Film event will be, Dance Weavers IV, “Choreography Geography” shot at a captivating live dance performance in Autumn 2022 in the spectacular surroundings of Eggardon Hill fort and with a score by local award winning composer Andrew Dickson. This event is also the first ever screening of the full ‘box set’ of Dance Weavers films and celebrates the 21st anniversary of Bridport Youth Dance.

BYD outdoor dance education programme is supported by Arts Council England, Dorset Council, Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and in partnership with The National Trust. BYD is supported by JD cleaning, Bridport Town Council, Little Fones Landscapes , Brit Valley Rotary and The Walbridge Trust. The BYD scholarship fund which supports children and young people from families on a lower income is supported by one anonymous angel.
