A Room With A View
UK | 1985 | 117 mins
from the E. M. Forster novel, adapted by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and directed by James Ivory
starring Helena Bonham Carter, Maggie Smith, Denholm Elliott, Julian Sands, Daniel Day Lewis and Judi Dench
When one thinks of the term film adaptation the image of Lucy Honeychurch instantly comes to mind. Adaptations have been around since film was invented, but A Room With a View somehow defines the genre with its period setting, extraordinary acting and stunning visualisations of the novel’s settings. But it is Jhabvala’s talent at transforming the written word to the screen that makes it a masterpiece. To celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary we present it here on the big screen.
(Friday 9th April at 10:30, Bridport Arts Centre).
