The Damned United

UK | 2009 | 98 MINS

from David Peace’s novel The Damned Utd, adapted by Peter Morgan and directed by Tom Hooper

starring Michael Sheen, Timothy Spall & Colm Meaney

David Peace’s novel creates a fictional interpretation of Brian Clough’s real life tenure as manager of Leeds United football club and is written as a firstperson stream of consciousness. Peter Morgan and Tom Hooper’s adaptation of Peace’s novel maintains the fiction-over-fact approach. Like the novel, the film flashes between Clough’s tenure at Derby County and his arrival at Leeds, demonstrating how the glories of his past contained the seeds of disaster.
